The itinerary
1. Marrakech → Aït Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Dadès
The Tichka pass, the ksar, and time to walk it properly rather than photograph it from the car park.
2. Dadès → Todra → Merzouga
A morning walk in the gorges, lunch with a family, and the dunes reached in daylight.
3. A day in the desert
Sunrise, then the day is yours: the nomad families, the black desert of Khamlia and its Gnaoua music, or nothing at all.
4. Merzouga → Midelt → Azrou → Fès
The long road north through the Ziz valley, the cedars of Azrou, and Fès at the end of the day.

What you actually see
The difference from the three-day version is one full extra day in the desert, and it changes everything. Instead of arriving in the evening and leaving in the morning, you have a whole day at Merzouga: sunrise without hurrying, a morning in the villages around the erg, a free afternoon and a second night under canvas.
That extra day also opens up things that are otherwise impossible. Rissani and its souk, one of the most genuine in the south, held on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. The khettaras, the underground irrigation galleries that made farming possible here for centuries. Or simply a long walk in the dunes with no departure time in mind.
The rest of the route matches the three-day tour: Tichka, Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, Dades, Todra, then north through Midelt and Azrou to Fes. But every stage gains an hour or two, which leaves time to stop where you feel like it rather than following a schedule.

What does the fourth day actually add?
A full day in the desert instead of one night, and an hour or two of slack on every other stage. It is the difference between crossing the south and seeing it.
Does it suit families?
Better than the three-day version, yes. The driving days are shorter and the desert day breaks the rhythm. Say the children’s ages and the programme adjusts.
Can the route be changed along the way?
Within limits, yes, since the nights are booked ahead. An extra stop or a detour is decided on the spot with the driver.
