The itinerary
- Drive north-east towards the Middle Atlas.
- The path down through the olive groves, past the macaques.
- The foot of the falls, and the boat that takes you under the spray.
- Lunch on a terrace facing the water.
- Back to Marrakech in the evening.

What you actually see
The Ouzoud falls are the highest in Morocco: a hundred and ten metres dropping in several stages, into a gorge of red rock among olive trees. They are three hours from Marrakech, which makes for a long day, but there is nothing else like the site in the country.
You go down by a made path along the cliff, with viewpoints at every turn and shade for most of the way. At the bottom, rowing boats take you close to the foot of the falls, right into the spray. The climb back takes about forty minutes, at your own pace.
Barbary macaques live wild in the olive groves around the site. They come close, especially if someone has been feeding them, which is best avoided: they are wild animals and they bite. Adil tells you what distance to keep.
Questions about this tour
Is the descent hard?
The path has steps, but it drops steeply and climbs back the same way. Allow forty minutes going up, more in real heat. It does not suit reduced mobility.
When is there most water?
March to June, after the snowmelt. By late summer the flow drops noticeably. The falls are fine all year, but the effect is not the same.
Can we swim at the foot of the falls?
There are pools where people swim, but the water is cold and the current strong near the falls. The boat lets you get close without going in.
